Should I put the bird leg ring on the left leg or on the right leg?
It doesn't matter what leg that you band but it is good to have a consistent system.
Suggested: Left leg = Female, Right leg = Male
This allows easier identification of bird breeds where males and females both look similar.
If the sex is unknown band the left leg. (The left side of a bird is the same as your left side if you and the bird are facing in the same direction.)
Some breeders place bird rings on both legs.

Open split bird rings are good for identification of birds. They can be applied at any time on young or old birds and are designed to be removed.
Closed bird rings are good for a permanent record such as showing the year of birth. They can only be applied on young birds at around 9 days old and are not designed to be removed.
Closed bird rings are more suitable for parrots with stronger beaks that can squash split bird rings too tight.

1. Use closed bird bands on birds that are still in the nest around 9 days old, while their foot is still small enough to fit through the bird band.	2. Hold the bird's leg. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the bird's foot.	3. Hold the front toes together and slide them through the bird band. If they don't slip through, the bird might be too old to use a closed bird band.	4. Continue sliding the bird band over the back toe. If it gets caught you can use a toothpick or similar tool to help pick it through.	5. Check that the bird band does not fall off. Check that the toes are not injured.

To finish closing the bird ring and to make a round shape, turn the bird ring 90 degrees so that the opening faces the side of the pliers.	5. Close the pliers until the shape of the bird ring is round. Do not squash the bird ring too far onto the birds leg.
